The blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere, from the White Sea to the Atlantic coast of southern France, and is an economically important species (1 million tons per year, FAO, 2002). At present however, little domestication has been achieved with bivalves, in contrast to agricultural crops, livestock and horticultural species like tomatoes, where selection and production is entirely controlled by man. For bivalves, despite their economic importance, no lines with selected characteristics have been taken to the production scale. There is therefore a need to make up for lost time. A first genetic linkage map of the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis : towards the identification of Bonamia resistance QTLs ArchiMer

The flat oyster Ostrea edulis is an endemic European oyster species, found on both Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. Its aquacultural production has dramatically decreased due to two successive diseases caused by the intracellular parasites Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae. Since 1985, Ifremer has undertaken a breeding program to produce oyster families which are tolerant to Bonamia. In this context, the next step is to identify QTLs for resistance to this parasite. The European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, occurs naturally from Norway to Morocco in the North-Eastern Atlantic and throughout the Mediterranean. The oyster has been a harvested species for at least 6000 years. However, it successively suffered from over harvesting and then from two protozoan diseases during the 1960s and its production has drastically decreased in Europe from that time. Following two generations of selection for tolerance to one of these diseases (bonamiosis), our aim is to optimize this selection with the assistance of molecular markers, that is to say to implement marker-assisted selection. Despite their economical importance, only a few microsatellite markers have so far been developed in those species. Polyploids can be defined as organisms with one or more additional chromosome sets with respect to the number most frequently found in nature for a given species. Triploids, organisms with three sets of homologous chromosomes, are found spontaneously in both wild and cultured populations and can be easily induced in many commercially relevant species of fish and shellfish. The major consequence of triploidy is gonadal sterility, which is of advantage in the aquaculture of molluscs since it can result in superior growth. QTL mapping for resistance to bonamiosis in the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis ArchiMer

A breeding programme has been undertaken by Ifremer to produce selected Ostrea edulis families which are resistant to Bonamia ostreae, a parasite which is the most significant constraint on aquaculture of this oyster. Using such families, we aimed to identify Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) of resistance/susceptibility to bonamiosis. We used an F2 family derived from a bi-parental cross between a wild oyster and an individual from one of the selected oyster families.
